The Mysterious Oculus of the Pantheon: A Hole to Heaven!

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Pantheon, one of the most fascinating monuments in Rome!

Among the innumerable curiosities that make the Pantheon a unique place, there is an extraordinary and mysterious detail: the Oculus, a circular hole located in the dome of the Pantheon which seems to create a direct portal to heaven!

The Oculus is an opening in the ceiling of the dome, made with a diameter of over 8 meters, and represents the only source of natural light inside the building. Its creation dates back to the 1st century AD, when the Roman emperor Hadrian had the ancient Pantheon, which originally dated back to 27 BC, renovated.

This mysterious circular eye not only illuminates the interior of the Pantheon with sunlight, but also has a symbolic and mystical function. The Oculus represents a connection between the building and the sky, as if a ray of divine light descended into that sanctuary dedicated to the gods.

Furthermore, the Oculus was designed in such a way as to favor a perfect weight distribution of the dome, which contributed to the extraordinary stability and durability of this monument. The dome is made of concrete, and its construction was an extraordinary feat of engineering for the time.

The Oculus of the Pantheon also offers a fascinating natural spectacle during rainy days. The rain that enters from the hole forms a suggestive effect, similar to a reverse waterfall, creating a mystical atmosphere inside the temple.
Every year, thousands of visitors from all over the world gather to admire this incredible masterpiece of Roman architecture, to discover its history and to be enchanted by the mystery of the Oculus.

The Pantheon continues to be one of Rome’s most evocative and fascinating symbols, a testament to the grandeur of ancient Roman architecture and its ability to inspire wonder and amazement in the hearts of those who visit it.

If you are in Rome, don’t miss the opportunity to admire this architectural jewel and to contemplate the hole towards the sky, an open window towards eternity!
